come
from herbs. Because man-made drugs are an adulteration of the source
herb they do not contain any life force, and therefore are unable to
HEAL, RESTORE VITAL ENERGY or BALANCE!
We suffer from so many illnesses because we lack understanding of our relationship
to the universe and the elements that were created as guides for our
health and healing. The elements: Ether/Air (spaces/cavities), Fire
(heart/small intestines), Water (kidneys/bladder), Earth
(spleen/stomach), Wood (liver/gall bladder) and Metal (lungs/colon) are
all represented within the body and connect directly to our 12 body
organs. This gives us a direct connection to the root source of all
illnesses and remedies to rid the body of all disease.
THE WATER ELEMENT embraces the organs of the Kidneys (yin) and Bladder (yang). The
Kidneys are the source of vital energy for all the organs of the body.
Some herbs that heal the kidneys and bladder include Cubeb Berries,
Marshmallow Root, Buchu Leaves, Horsetail, Uva Ursi, Parsley, Nettle
Leaves, and Fenugreek Seeds. Due to the constraints of space here,
please visit the website under Harlem News Herbal Tea Formulas for
proper preparation for this tea and further explanation of the Water
Element.

Divine Creation, herbs and all things in the earth possess a life
force that enables plants to heal us.
WATER
ELEMENT: Part 2 Embracing the organs of the
Kidneys (yin) and Bladder (yang), the nature of the Water Element is
associated with hearing (the ears are shaped like the kidneys), the
emotion of fear, the colors blue/black (like the colors of seas and
rivers), a cold climate, urine and our bones; and the hair on the
head is an indicator of the health of the kidneys. When any of these
aspects (and a few others) of the Water Element are out of balance,
symptoms manifests. I.e., dread of cold, edema, too afraid of things,
hate/love the color blue or black, diarrhea, impotence, premature
ejaculation, lifeless dull hair, etc. Herbs are a vital source to
restore balance and vital energy. The kidneys are responsible for the
storage of energy; and though they mostly serve as filters of fluid
wastes they are always involved with deficiency symptoms and are most
commonly associated with chronic diseases.
A few Western
herbs that restore kidney energy and balance: Cinnamon, Cayenne,
Walnut, Bayberry Bark, Fenugreek, Prickly Ash Bark; some Chinese
herbs: Aconite, Walnut, Epimedium Macranthum, Foenugraeci. Please
visit the website under Harlem News Herbal Formulas for further
information on the kidneys and bladder.

Some people seem
unable t
o generate creative ideas, and have difficulty “changing”
or “bending with the wind.” They may not have clear thoughts,
might experience dry or tearing eyes, hold on to anger too long or
unnecessarily, or maybe not feel anger when they should. They may
also find themselves susceptible to brittle nails or frequently given
to sprains and muscle pulls. They can hate/love the color green,
strongly like/dislike sour tasting foods. These people are
experiencing imbalances in their . . .
WOOD
ELEMENT: which embraces the organs of the Liver (yin) and
Gall Bladder (yang). Spring is the season of the liver and the power
or birth. The Liver is like a “General of an Army” because it
maintains evenness and harmony of movement throughout the body. The
Liver opens into the eyes: when the Liver is harmonized and receives
blood properly and plentifully, the eyes can see; many eye and vision
disorders are taken to be liver-related. Infertility is often an
imbalance of the liver.
Some herbs that
restore balance to the liver include: Burdock, Chaparral, Dandelion,
Yellow Dock, Gentian, Prickly Ash Bark and Sassafras. Due to the
constraints of space, please visit the website's Front Page under

. . and the sooner we come to understand and embrace the workings
of nature inside our bodies as well as elements in the environment,
the sooner we can experience optimum health, raise our Life Energy
and have the tools to eliminate disease from our lives.
Last week's
article gave a brief understanding of the Liver's functioning within
the WOOD ELEMENT. In addition to creativity, planning, decision
making and judgment calls, the blood is also influenced by a
'balanced' liver. The Liver Yin function is the storing of
blood, and the Liver Yang function is the spreading of Chi. During
physical activity the Liver allows the blood to move freely outward
when the body needs blood for nourishment. The smooth movement of Chi
throughout the body is dependent on the LIver's flowing and spreading
action and all activity that depends on Chi – i.e., the movement of
Chi itself, of Blood, of Meridian Chi, and the activity of all the
organs ~ depends on the Liver. During rest or inactivity the blood
returns to and is stored in the Liver. When we have difficulty
sleeping, or restless sleep, or wake unrested, it may partially be
due to our Liver being out of balance and is unable to do its job
fully. (Inquire about our Liver Giver formula to remedy this.) Due to
the constraints of space, please visit the website's Front Page under

. . and in this issue you will discover exactly how herbs work.
Each family of
plants has its own peculiar habit of taking from the soil a specific
group of chemical elements, and like
everything else in Divine Creation, herbs have their cycles.
Different parts of an herb are potent during different cycles of its
energy, and you need to harvest specific parts when its energy is
highest in that part. I.e., when an herb is flowering, that is when
the flower is most potent. Flowers generally heal the higher, more
mental and spiritual aspects of our being. Different herb parts heal
different parts of our bodies. In fact, the physical, mental
and spiritual embodiment of man is perfectly reflected the root, stem
and leaves of a plant, in that all the chemical constitutents of
which our bodies are composed are contained in the roots, barks,
leaves, flowers and fruits of herbs.
Delicate
herb parts, like soft le
aves and flowers should not be boiled,
because the therapeutic properties will be lost to evaporation.
Roots need to be aggressively boiled in order to release the
therapeutic properties. Some herbs are water solvent, some more
effective when made into a tincture. Join our workshop on Oct 31st
to learn how to select the right herbs for the right symptoms in the
right proportions to make effective formulas. Due to the

effective HERBAL TONICS can be used to maintain your health quite
easily.
Herbs act very
similar to our foods, in that they provide our body with nutrients
and other components that enhance organ functions. The same way we
take food to strengthen bones, build our blood, feed our nervous
system, reduce cholesterol, etc., herbs are used in the same way to
feed, rejuvenate and regenerate our organs. Formulas made with
specific herbs act directly on that organ system, enabling it to rid
itself of the culprits causing the dis-ease. The way you prepare the
formula (as a tea, tincture, capsule, etc.) and the strength of the
formula, which is determined by the proportions of each herb to
others within the formula, will determine its healing power. TONICS
are made with milder combinations that, when taken in smaller amounts
over a longer period of time, will have a general effect on the whole
body, and enable you to maintain a healthy balance of that system's
vital energy.
Following are some
herbs for specific organ systems, which when taken as tonics can help
restore and maintain your energy balance: Nerves: skullcap, lobelia,
valerian, fu ling; Liver: dandelion, sassafras, mandrake, cascara;
Gall Bladder: oregon grape root, wild yam, parsley, golden seal and
Urinary: sok day, fu ling, gravel root, uva ursi. Due to the

using nature's herbs to make healing formulas for you and your family
is self-empowering. Being able to go to the herb store to select a
few herbs: one that reduces fever, another that expels mucus or one
to eliminate inflammation can help you redefine “health care” for
yourself and your loved ones. Taking back control of the 'medicines'
your family uses impacts on the cost of your health care and
definitely reduces excessive doctors visits and excessive co-pays.
Natural medicines also takes the guess work out of what the
repercussions and side effects might be ~ because there are none.
We are all
healers, inherently, and we need to return to our roots and get back
to nature. One of our December workshops will teach you which
foods/condiments in your kitchen are healing. If you have cold
extremeties in the dead of winter, ginger is your remedy; or if you
can't get really warm in your core, cayenne capsules will resolve
that dilemma. For migranes and headaches use nettles and dandelion,
to strengthen the kidneys you can use golden rod and sarsaparilla and
to help repair the liver (which rejuvenates the pineal gland) use
milk thistle and dandelion. Each of these herbs when used with others
in effective combinations relieve dis-ease and restores balance to
our organs.

. . and safe, efficient use of herbs is very simple. As part of
Divine Creation, herbs and all things in the earth possess a life
force that enables plants to heal us.
. . . and
when we don't live in harmony with the earth's elements, the Divine
Forces shows us many ways to identify the source of illness and
symptoms that traditional medicine oft times can't seem to idenitfy.
If you have a history of digestive or bowel weakness, or of winters
with consistent colds, these are signs that your colon and lungs are
out of balance. Other indicators might be excess mucus or
insufficient mucus in the linings of the internal organs that may
manifest as unexplained pains; a deficiency or dryness of body hair
and/or a tendency to excessive worry. All these are imbalances of the
METAL element, which govern the Lungs and Colon.
If you find
yourself resistent to change, a nervous eater, or seem to be
unnecessarily apprehensive; maybe you have excessive or deficient
saliva with dry or discolored lips, there is clearly an imbalance in
your EARTH element, which governs the Stomach and Spleen. Because the
Stomach is responsible for “receiving” and “ripening”
ingested foods and fluids, and the Spleen spreads the Chi (life
energy) from food, moisture, and blood, other indicators of
imbalances might be that you are too sympathetic, or given to
excessive singing.

restore balance to the elements/organs, and restore vital life energy

while everyone is preparing for the New Year with intense cleaning
rituals in their homes . . . Herbs are a natural source for your
personal cleansing.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Here are a few cleansing formulas to help you jumpstart 2010. LEMON
SHOTS: to reduce excess mucus accumulation – in a few ounces of
water add a small amount of cayenne pepper and 2tsps of lemon juice.
For the ultimate cleanse, do three “shots” (2hrs apart) during
the body's natural “elimination cycle” (4am-12n). To clear the
sinuses and mucus congestion in the head do a 10-Day Cayenne
Eyewash. The burning of the cayenne in the eyes is healing and
NOT destructive. LIVER CLEANSE: (and subsequently every organ
in the body), drink a tonic made from these herbs a few times a week:
Gentian, Dandelion, Yellow Dock, Oregon Grape Root, Blessed Thistle,
Licorice, Skullcap and Cayenne. URINARY TRACT CLEANSE: combine
Gravel Root, Parsley, Chickweed, Horsetail, Hydrangea, Marshmallow
Root and Fu Ling and drink “cool” 2-3x weekly. To help
heal difficult sores rinse with tea of Comfrey, Plantain,
Burdock and Black Walnut Bark. To rid persistent coughs, drink
tea of Coltsfoot, Mullein, Wild Cherry Bark and Licorice 3x daily.
None of these formulas are offered as a cure for disease or as
replacement for medications; consult with your physician before
taking any remedies.

HERBS ARE NATURE'S MEDICINE . . .
As
previously stated, there are specific herbs for specific organs and
systems. With respiratory ailments, asthma, bronchitis, chronic
coughs, you need to protect, lubricate and heal damaged mucus linings
with DEMULCENTS (Marshmallow, Comfrey, Irish Moss, Slippery Elm,
Chickweed, Licorice, Psylium, Flax, Chia Seeds, Aloe Vera, Burdock
and Fenugreek) and rid the chest of excess mucus with EXPECTORANTS
(Wild Cherry Bark, Coltsfoot [the "Cough Dispeller"],
Horehound, Mullein, Yerba Santa.) Inhale as steam (with a towel over
your head leaning over a pot of the steaming herbs on your stove
[flame off]), use: Sage, Eucalyptus, and Bay Leaves. For asthmatics,
additional herbs should be taken with difficulty inhaling, as this
indicates the Kidneys inability to “grasp chi” from the inhaled
breath! To strengthen the KIDNEY ENERGY you can use: Cinnamon,
Cayenne, Walnut, Bayberry Bark, Fenugreek, Prickly Ash Bark; some
Chinese herbs: Aconite, Epimedium Macranthum, Foenugraeci.
ANTIASTHMATIC herbs relieve the symptoms of asthma; some dilate the
bronchioles (Lobelia), others break up mucus (Yerba Santa, Coltsfoot)
and still others are smoked for quick relief or taken as teas
(Mullein). Other antiasthmatic herbs include: Wild Yam, Comfrey,
Elecampane and Wild Cherry Bark. Skullcap is an ANTISPASMODIC herb
that will help the body relax, relieve spasms and coughing and allow
less labored breathing; a little should be added to formulas.

. . . and understanding nature is important to give us a handle on
how to identify and treat our common ailments.
Regular readers of
this column know that I always connect the seasons of nature with our
internal organs, and show how the elements manifest within our body
in order to help us learn how to identify our symptoms and pinpoint
the organs out of balance and how to restore that balance. Autumn,
the season that governs the lungs and our colon, rules our mucus, our
skin (our largest breathing organ) and body hair, which indicates the
health and balance of our lungs and colon. If either organ is out of
balance, you might experience indecision and confusion,
overindulgence and fatigue. This is the METAL ELEMENT, which, as
ruler of these organs, governs our intake through breathing and
eating food; and output through activity and elimination – all of
which is crucial to staying healthy. Degrees of mental clarity can be
compared to Metal's varying forms, which range from crude, impure, and
dense ores to a shining, crystal-clear gem. If you have digestive or
bowel weakness, or winters of colds and lung problems, Autumn is the
time to prepare yourself for staying well for the Fall and Winter.
